Hypnotics Drugs

HYPNOTICHypnotics are drugs which dull the sensitivities of the body so that no sensory impulses are carried to the brain. In large doses they dull and injure the brain cells, causing profound sleep which may result in complete unconsciousness and death.

These drugs include all opium derivatives and their related compounds, all babiturates commonly called sleeping pills and anesthetics. They are all habit-forming and narcotic poisons, and should only be prescribed by doctors in emergencies as needed.

They ought never to be included in prescriptions which are to be used for any length of time.

Refuse such medicines when prescribed for you. The drugs used for these purposes are all either opium or babiturate compounds, under different trade names as follows:

  • Morphine

  • Codeine

  • Heroin

  • Papine

  • Dilaudid

  • Demerol

  • Dicodide

  • Emeracol

  • Phenobarbital

  • Pentobarbital

  • Luminal

  • Seconal

  • Medinal

  • Cyclopal

  • Ipral

  • Delvinol

  • Amytal

  • Nembutal

  • Carbutal

  • Allonal

  • Adalin

  • Alurate

  • Ortol

  • Sulphonal

  • Trional

  • Varonal

The above are only some that are commonly used. Watch out and don't be trapped into their habitual use for the relief of headaches or menstrual pains.

There are only a few serious diseases which require frequent use of these drugs.
