Myelitis

Myelitis is a degeneration of the nerve tissue of the spinal cord. If the degeneration of the cord extends all across its structure, there will be paralysis from that level down.

Syphilis, injuries, overstrain and exposure to cold may cause myelitis.Disease or tumors of the bones of the spine (vertebrae) may cause pressure on the cord and produce degeneration of the tissues.All these can be discovered by X-ray examination.

Treating the cause comes first.A tumor should be removed , or if the cause is syphilis this should  be cured. The patients must be kept in bed on an air mattress and given the proper hygienic and medical attention
