Multiple Sclerosis is a degenerative disease of the brain and nervous system.The parts of the brain affected vary. The disease is progressive over many years and the symptoms will vary as new parts of the brain become involved.
A national organization for the study of multiple sclerosis has just been formed. Up to now nothing is known to the medical fraternity about this disease.
The symptoms are weakness of muscles and joints, tremors, unsteady gait, hesitant speech, paralysis, headaches, dizziness, blindness, lack of bladder and bowel control. The patient may improve somewhat for a while and then get a more severe relapse, but may continue to live on for many years.
The treatment is along general principles of good feeding, fresh air, massage, exercise, prevention of exposure to cold and infection, avoidance of worry and excitement.
Arsenic preparations, penicillin, sulfa, high fever therapy in something like the Hitler crematory ovens, and many of the newer destructive drugs have been discontinued by public pressure.
The voice of the people is the voice of God, says the old proverb, and doctors cannot forever get away with it but will have to buckle down to do some research on this diseases and on hundreds of other diseases.
An increase of 50 or 100 thousand more doctors in the United States would accomplish this Herculean task of unearthing all medical problems begging solution.As the disease often affects youngish women, precautions should be taken to prevent pregnancy.
In case the patient is confined to bed, care should be taken to prevent bedsores by changing positions, by alcohol sponging and by rubber cushions
