The prevention of halitosis depends on mouth hygiene and on the avoidance of certain foods and drugs.Keeping the mouth, teeth and gums in healthy, hygienic and fresh-smelling state is not only a matter of desirable personal and social consequence, but is one of the most important disease-preventing measures.Seeing yours dentist at least once a year to have your teeth cleaned, cavities filled and abscessed teeth extracted is of prime importance to the preservation of health.
With the mouth as with every part of the body, personal effort at good daily hygiene care will be amply rewarded by rich returns in good health. The mouth being a warm, moist cavity receiving all sorts of food and in which particles of food are left between the gums and teeth, is a most favorable location for the thriving of bacteria, especially the pus germs.( Heat, moisture and food are just what bacteria thrive on)
You thus see how the decomposition and fermentation of food particles retained in the mouth and consequent multiplication of bacteria cause the formation of ill-smelling gases, giving a disagreeable odor to the mouth.
In the majority of cases disagreeable mouth odor is due to neglected mouth hygiene.Don't blame your stomach if you wake up in the morning with a bad taste and disagreeable odor in your mouth.Brushing your teeth before retiring, followed by rinsing the mouth and throat with plenty of warm salt water 1/2 teaspoonful of table salt to a glass of water, using at least one glassful; (there more, the better), will find you in the morning with a fresh taste in mouth and a relishing appetite for breakfast
No magic tooth paste or tooth powder and no fancy-smelling mouth washes and gargles are necessary. Some of them are distinctly harmful containing chlorine smelling compounds, potassium chlorate, zinc chloride, sodium perborate, lysol, beta naphtol, and other caustic chemicals.Use no tooth paste, tooth powder, or liquid preparations containing any one of these powerful compounds.they will iritate the gums and attack and corrode the enamel of the teeth
Even in diseased conditions of the mouth, or any other part, doctors find it more advisable in most cases to use salt solutions for rinsing and irrigation. Brush your gums and teeth and rinse your mouth and throat in the morning and after every meal.If the spaces between your teeth are very small, use a toothpick to remove food particles before brushing.
Be sure not to injure the gums and make them bleed when using a toothpick.Using dental floss for cleaning the teeth is too complicated and injures the gums unless you are very careful. If you eat out and cannot manage to brush your teeth after meals, at least clear out the food particles with a toothpick and rinse with plenty of plain water
